Indoor Air and Health
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Since today people spend about 80 - 90% of their life time indoors, many buildings by today are very well isolated and many people keep the windows and doors of their homes permanently closed, the quality of people‘s building environment can be crucial to their well-being and health.
Unfortunately an unhealthy home can lead to fatal consequences for the personal health. It probably can not be dismissed , that the causes for some diseases and allergies must be sought in the buildings we spend our time in!
What are VOC's ?
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. While most people can smell high levels of some VOCs, other VOCs have no odor. Odor does not indicate the level of risk from inhalation of this group of chemicals. There are thousands of different VOCs produced and used in our daily lives.
Why are low and free VOC products better ?
Minimum-level or zero VOC products cut the amount of chemicals evaporating in your home. These make the air indoors fresher for you and your family. Lower VOC products are thought to alleviate allergy symptoms, headaches, and respiratory problems.
What can be the health effects of VOC exposure?
The risk of health effects from inhaling any chemical depends on how much is in the air, how long and how often a person breathes it in. Scientists look at short-term (acute) exposures as hours to days or long-term (chronic) exposures as years to even lifetime.
Breathing low levels of VOCs for long periods of time may increase some people’s risk of health problems. Several studies suggest that exposure to VOCs may make symptoms worse in people who have asthma or are particularly sensitive to chemicals. These are much different exposures than occupational exposures to VOCs. VOCs refer to a group of chemicals. Each chemical has its own toxicity and potential for causing different health effects.
